How to Clean your House Leading up to a Move

Moving is a stressful life event; in order to make it easier you want to clear as much clutter from your home as possible before the big day. Many of your belongings are indeed coming with you, and we can help you with that! But, you want to clear as much junk before the moving day as possible. Here’s a few tips on how to clean up the house in the weeks leading up to the move:

  • Start using up any extra items you have. If you are one to stock pile canned foods in an extra pantry or basement, start working through this food in the months leading up to moving day. If you find you have too much to move, canned foods are perfect for donation to a food shelter.
  • For every room, walk around with a donation box and a trash bag. Yes, there is a good chance that you have items in every room that you can donate or throw away. If it is particularly valuable, try posting to Craigslist.
  • Go through your belongings and make a special box of everything you will need right when you move in. That means having a roll of toilet paper and paper towels, snack food, water bottles, dog food, and anything else you will need on move-in day. That way, you have everything separated that you know you will use right when you get to your new home.
  • Yard sale! Nothing helps you get rid of your junk faster than having a moving sale. These days, you really only need to post the moving sale to Craigslist to fill the yard with potential buyers.
