6 Tips for Moving in the Fall

Whether you’re moving locally or long distance to your new home in the summer or in the fall, it’s always a hassle. Nonetheless, following precautionary seasonal measures is important to take while moving in the fall. Here are six tips to make things easier as you move in the fall.

Cut Down On The Belongings You Will Bring

For starters, you should consider lessening the packing load, as this will make loading and unloading the moving truck as easy as possible. You can do this by throwing away or donating things you don’t need. Sort through all your belongings to see what you’ll eventually throw out next season, and donate them. Moving out is also a great opportunity to donate any warm clothes that your family may have grown out of before the season arrives. In addition to helping the moving process, cutting down the number of items you have will also make you feel good knowing you have more space in your new home, so you can purchase newer belongings over time.

Pack for The Season

Since you’re moving in the fall, it’s a great idea to look through your garage and closets for items you’ll need in once the colder weather and snow arrive. You can pack away all the summer items that you won’t need until next year and keep all the outdoor furniture in storage to avoid bringing it home right away. Think of the specific crockery and clothing that you will need in the fall, and keep them near the beginning of the box you will put them in. That way, they are the first things you will unpack and be readily available if needed.

Ensure Your New Home Is Ready Upon Arrival

You’ll need to make sure that your home is ready to go once you arrive at your new home to begin unloading. Aside from making necessary repairs, if there are any, months ahead, you should do a check one to two weeks prior to moving. This is where you can see whether the electricity, water, and heating are all up and running and ready for use.  The worst thing that can happen is that you are unpacked but don’t have any heat to protect you from the cooler climate, or running water for basic life necessities.

Cover Boxes & Furniture

Fall means rain and cooler weather.  With this in mind, your furniture or boxes can get wet during the move which will run you the risk of damage and mold. This won’t bode well for you as you settle into your new house. Luckily, you can avoid these problems by using plastic coverings and plastic wrap to shield cardboard boxes and furniture from the rain. If you need to, you can also have someone hold an umbrella over the piece of furniture as you move it into your new home.

Run Leftover Errands

Remember those old errands that you’ve been putting off for months, with a new home you now have the time to finally complete them. This applies especially when you’re moving in the fall since the colder and wetter weather is approaching that will entice you to stay indoors. Therefore you can choose to get your car serviced, buy necessary items that aren’t available near your new home, and any other errand you had planned before beginning your fall move.

Keep It Clean

We know that you’re excited to finally move to your new home, but let’s not forget that you haven’t necessarily moved out entirely from your old home.  If you have a security deposit, then you will want to make sure you leave your old home as clean as possible. You will want to avoid any unnecessary stains, damage, and dents during the moving process. The wet fall weather means that mud, leaves, and dirt can be tracked inside very easily. You can avoid this by laying down plastic or towels at the entrance when you’re moving out of your old home, as well as when you arrive at your new home. In addition, make sure to keep your cleaning supplies at hand so when you are finished with the move, you can clean any dirt or debris that may have entered the home during the move.

You can implement these tips while long distance moving to your new home in the fall. Try these out the next time you move so that you move comfortably and without much trouble. If you are interested in moving services, contact our office today!
